"In this definitive work on Spaniels, the author’s style is as lively as the nine varieties of breeds she describes in fastidious and fascinating detail, making them all sound irresistible. I never knew a thing about Clumber Spaniels before. Now I want one!"

Joan Lowell-Smith
Syndicated pet columnist

"THE SPORTING SPANIEL HANDBOOK is great! The most factual book about the spaniel breeds on the market. I most definitely will put it on my recommended reading list for any one hoping to own a spaniel, but hasn’t figured out which one will be just right for them."

Sandra Burt-Jones
Long-time Field Spaniel breeder

"I just finished reading THE SPORTING SPANIEL HANDBOOK. I think another fitting title may have been, THE TRUTH ABOUT SPORTING SPANIELS. The writing is a breath of fresh air for those who are always on the lookout for accurate information about the rare spaniels. I especially enjoyed the chapters on the Irish Water Spaniel and the Sussex Spaniel, two breeds near and dear to my heart. I found myself nodding "Oh, yes!" whenever I read a description which reminded me dogs I have known well. It’s obvious to this reader that the author loves her subject matter!"

Dan Sayres
Irish Water Spaniel/Sussex Spaniel
Owner and exhibitor

"I just read THE SPORTING SPANIEL HANDBOOK. It is a terrific addition to the "spaniel literature". The book is written by Field Spaniel owner, Loren Spiotta-DiMare. She has written several animal-oriented books and numerous pet-related magazine articles. Her deep background in writing shows through in the clarity and readability of the text.

The book starts out with a history and overview of all the nine sporting spaniels recognized by the AKC including lots of photos and comparison charts, and examines and explains the various titling activities available (conformation, agility, obedience, tracking, flyball and hunting) to the spaniel and his owner. Then each breed gets a full chapter covering history and origin of the breed, what the breed is like today (including attention to hunting instinct), personality, temperament, training, exercise and grooming needs, and health concerns. The AKC Standard is also included. The graphics, photos and design of this book are truly excellent. It’s very easy to locate information, and the comparison charts should really help spaniel owners sift through the many differences and similarities of these nine breeds.

I have long used Jim Spencer’s HUP! along with Roger Caras’ DOG BOOK to help people who are looking for a spaniel breed. I’ll still use these two, of course, but there’s no question in my mind that THE SPORTING SPANIEL HANDBOOK will be the first one I reach for now."
